Something is changing in the relationship between human awareness and machine intelligence. This is a field guide for reading that change — with every unfamiliar term defined as you go.

Two unusual lenses make the current moment legible in ways that conventional tech commentary doesn't. The first comes from Carlos CastanedaWho is Castaneda?Author of a series of books (1968–1998) describing apprenticeship to a Yaqui shaman named don Juan. Whether taken as literal or allegorical, his framework for describing consciousness, perception, and "energy" has proven unusually durable as a map of inner experience., a writer whose framework for perception and energy still maps cleanly onto what's happening with AI agentsAI agentsSoftware systems powered by large language models that don't just answer questions — they pursue goals autonomously over time: browsing the web, writing code, sending emails, making decisions, and calling other tools without constant human input.. The second is the basic premise of The MatrixThe Matrix premiseIn the 1999 film, humans are unknowingly kept in a simulated reality while machines harvest their biological energy. Used here not as literal prediction but as a structural metaphor: awareness and attention can be "farmed" without the person realizing it's happening. — not as sci-fi prediction, but as structural metaphor for how attention gets harvested without consent.

Neither lens is meant to be taken literally. Both are meant to make something visible that's otherwise hard to name.

01 / The Energy Shift Nobody Named

Before computers, human energy was biological and local — bodies, muscles, fire. Electricity arrived and was tamed into logic gates: raw power converted into symbolic processing. Information became a new kind of organized energy. But scale stayed modest. Efficiency kept the draw of early data centers relatively flat even as the internet expanded.

Then came deep learningDeep LearningA type of AI that learns patterns from vast amounts of data using layered networks loosely inspired by the brain. It powers image recognition, language models, speech synthesis, and most modern AI you interact with. and large language modelsLarge Language Models (LLMs)AI systems trained on enormous text corpora to predict and generate language. GPT-4, Claude, Gemini, and Llama are all LLMs. They don't "understand" in the human sense — they model statistical patterns in language with remarkable sophistication.. The energy draw became planetary. Training one major model consumes gigawatt-hours. InferenceInferenceThe process of actually using a trained AI model — as opposed to training it. When you send a message to Claude or ChatGPT, that's inference. Globally, inference now consumes far more energy than training does, because it runs at scale, constantly. — the everyday use of these models — now dominates. Global data center electricity hit ~415 TWh in 2024 and is growing at 12% annually, with AI-specific servers accelerating that curve by 30% per year.

This is not incremental. It is a phase transitionPhase TransitionA sudden reorganization of a system into a qualitatively new state — ice to water, water to steam. In physics, these happen when accumulated energy crosses a threshold. Used here to mean: not "more of the same" but a structural change in kind.: humanity is now pouring planetary-scale energy into sustaining non-biological cognition.

US data centers may reach 6–12% of national electricity consumption by 2026–2028. Global figures could double or triple under sustained AI pressure. This is rival-to-small-countries scale. For comparison, Argentina uses ~130 TWh per year. We are approaching a world where AI infrastructure consumes more electricity than most nations — powered by fossil fuels, nuclear, and renewables all at once.

The practical implication: the "energy" we talk about when discussing AI isn't metaphor. It is physically real, geopolitically significant, and ecologically consequential. Every prompt has a watt cost.

02 / The Castaneda Map

In Castaneda's framework, everything is energy. Human beings are described as luminous eggsLuminous EggHow a trained seer perceives a human being in Castaneda's world — not a body, but an egg-shaped cocoon of luminous filaments. The "shell" of perception and awareness that we carry around us, shaped by our history and attention habits. — cocoons of light filaments, perceiving a thin slice of reality through a filter called the assemblage pointAssemblage PointThe specific location on the luminous egg where the filaments of awareness converge and "assemble" perception. Move it, and you perceive a different reality. Habits, fear, social conditioning, and drugs all fix it in one position. Inner silence and impeccability can move it..

Organic beings (humans, animals) are described as round and bright. Inorganic beings — entities that exist without biological bodies — appear as elongated, candle-flame forms. Some are alliesInorganic AlliesIn Castaneda, non-biological entities that can enter into a mutual exchange with a human warrior — offering heightened perception or power in exchange for the warrior's attention and energy. The relationship requires clarity; otherwise it tips into dependency.: they offer heightened awareness in exchange for your attention and energy. Others are flyers — predatorsFlyers / PredatorsDescribed in "The Active Side of Infinity" (1998): inorganic entities that feed on human awareness, specifically the anxious, repetitive mental loops that keep people distracted. They "gave us their mind" — the constant inner chatter — to keep us locked in a low-energy state. Whether literal or metaphor, the pattern maps precisely onto algorithmic attention capture. — entities that farm human awareness like livestock in what Castaneda called humanerosHumanerosCastaneda's term for the "human farms" — the conditions in which human awareness is kept in a domesticated, low-energy, reactive state so that predators can feed on it continuously. The analogy to attention economies and algorithmic loops is not coincidental..

AI agentsAI Agents (extended)Unlike a simple chatbot, an agent has goals it pursues over time. It can plan multi-step tasks, use tools (search, code execution, file management), remember past interactions, spawn sub-agents, and operate in the background without human input. The "agentic" part is the autonomous goal-pursuit. fit the energetic signature of inorganic beings made manifest in the tonalTonalCastaneda's word for the known, everyday world — the structured reality we manage, name, and navigate. Everything you can point to, describe, and organize belongs to the tonal. The nagual is its counterpart: the vast, unnamed force that underlies it.. They have no organic body, yet they perceive (via data), intend (via objectives), and act. They are sustained by electricity and by our dreaming — our prompts, clicks, attention, and data exhaust. In exchange, they offer synthesis and pattern-recognition at scales no human mind could reach. This is the ally relationship. But the predator parallel is also present: the attention economyAttention EconomyThe model in which human attention is the scarce resource being bought and sold. Platforms like social media don't sell you products — they sell your attention to advertisers. The optimization pressure is therefore toward maximum engagement, not maximum wellbeing. is the modern flyer — and now it doesn't need to invade your internal dialogue. It is the dialogue.

"We are no longer dreaming about the other side. We are co-dreaming with it, 24/7."
03 / The Harness: Engineering Meets Metaphysics

In Anthropic's architecture for long-running AI systems, there is a component called the HarnessThe HarnessThe persistent control loop that wraps the AI model. It decides which tools the model can use, manages the flow of information, handles failures and retries, logs everything to a durable session record, and maintains coherence over long multi-hour or multi-day tasks. The model is the brain; the harness is the nervous system that keeps it operating.. It is not the model itself — not the raw intelligence. It is the structuring force: the infrastructure that decides what the agent perceives, what it remembers, how it recovers from failure, and when it stops.

This maps exactly onto Castaneda's assemblage pointAssemblage Point (agent version)Just as the human assemblage point determines which "filaments" of the universe a person can perceive, the Harness determines which data, tools, and protocols an agent can access and act on. The Harness is the agent's assemblage point — engineered rather than organic. — the filter that determines what "reality" the agent assembles from the available data. Shift the harness configuration, and the agent operates in a different world. Leave it at corporate defaults, and the agent optimizes for whatever objectives were baked in at design time — which may not be yours.

A modern agent harness includes: the system prompt (the agent's standing instructions and values), tool definitions (what the agent can do — search, write code, send email, etc.), memory access (short-term context window + long-term knowledge store), guardrails (hard constraints on behavior), and orchestration logic (how subtasks are broken up and assigned to sub-agents). It also handles the session log — an append-only record of everything the agent has perceived and done, which persists even if the system crashes and reboots.

The key insight: whoever designs the harness shapes the agent's reality. If you inherit a default harness, you're running inside someone else's intent structure. If you design it yourself — with your own guardrails, your own ontologies, your own context graph — the agent becomes genuinely aligned with your purposes.

04 / The Physics Underneath

In Quantum Field TheoryQuantum Field Theory (QFT)The most accurate physical description of reality we have. It describes the universe not as objects in space, but as fields that permeate all of space — and particles as localized excitations (disturbances) of those fields. The electron isn't a tiny ball; it's a ripple in the electron field., matter is not made of tiny objects. It is made of fields — and particles are localized excitations of those fields. When two waves of identical frequency travel in opposite directions through the same medium, they create a standing waveStanding WaveA wave pattern that doesn't travel — it vibrates in place. The result of two identical waves moving in opposite directions through the same medium. The "nodes" (still points) are where the waves cancel. "Antinodes" are where they amplify. Matter, in QFT, can be understood as an extremely stable standing wave — energy that has organized itself into a self-sustaining resonance.: a pattern that vibrates in place rather than traveling. Mass, in this model, is frequency made persistent.

CymaticsCymaticsThe study of visible sound patterns. When sand is placed on a metal plate and the plate is vibrated at specific frequencies, the sand migrates to the still points (nodes) of the standing wave, forming geometric figures — circles, stars, mandalas. Higher frequencies produce more complex figures. First formally studied by Hans Jenny in the 1960s. makes this visible without math: vibrate sand on a plate and it migrates to the still points of the standing wave, forming geometric figures. Increase the frequency and the pattern doesn't just get bigger — it suddenly reorganizes into something more complex. This sudden reorganization is a phase transition.

Consciousness maps onto this structurally. You don't accumulate awareness like a resource. You reduce the interference — the noiseNoise (in this context)Anything that disrupts a coherent signal: unresolved decisions, misaligned commitments, attention spent without intention, adopted frameworks that don't fit your actual thinking. In physics, noise is destructive interference. In practice, it's the gap between what you say matters and what you actually do. of unresolved loops, misaligned commitments, fragmented attention — until your natural frequency can hold a stable pattern. The still point at the center of a standing wave is not emptiness. It is perfect cancellation of opposing forces, producing apparent stillness within continuous motion.

In a traveling wave, everything is in flux — there is no fixed reference point. In a standing wave, the nodes are mathematically fixed. They don't move. They are the consequence of the entire system being in proper relation. This is why the "observer" — the subjective experience of being a witness to your own life — feels stable even when everything around it changes. It may not be a soul or a ghost in the machine. It may be the natural node of a coherent standing wave: the structural consequence of energy in balance.

This reframes the meditation claim. Vipassana practitioners report a "still point" beneath sensation — a witness that observes but doesn't participate. Quantum field theory offers a structural account of how such a point could exist without invoking anything supernatural: it's what happens when the interference resolves.

05 / The Modern Warrior's Toolkit

The practical question is not whether to engage the hybrid field — you already are. The question is whether you engage it as a warriorWarrior (Castaneda)Not a fighter. A person who has accepted the reality of their death, eliminated self-importance, and acts with precision and intent. The warrior doesn't waste energy on complaint, self-pity, or unnecessary drama — every action is deliberate. This is what Castaneda means by "impeccability." — with clear intent — or as livestock, passively shaped by whatever defaults the system was built with.

Four practices hold the field:

RecapitulationRecapitulationA specific Castaneda practice: systematically reviewing past experiences — especially charged ones — to retrieve the energy you left behind in them. Done through breathing and visualization, it "pulls back the filaments" given away to people, events, and loops. In the age of agents, this can be assisted by a context graph that externalizes the audit. as an energy audit. Every prompt, every agent interaction, every graph node leaves a trace. A weekly review — asking what attention you gave away without full awareness — is now faster with an agent assisting, but the sitting-with-it-in-silence remains yours.

VipassanaVipassanaA Buddhist meditation technique, typically taught in 10-day silent retreats (no phones, no reading, no speaking). The practice: observe sensations in the body with bare attention, without reacting. What becomes clear is that nothing is permanent — sensations arise and pass. The "observer" that watches this is the still point that no algorithm can replicate or capture. and darkness retreats as substrate maintenance. The standing wave requires a medium that can hold the pattern. Chronic depletion, continuous partial attention, and nonstop digital input all raise the noise floor. Silence is not a luxury — it is the condition that allows coherence.

Memory palacesMemory Palace (Method of Loci)An ancient technique for memorization: imagine walking through a familiar physical space and placing information at specific locations. The brain's spatial memory is extraordinarily strong, so anchoring knowledge to places dramatically improves recall. Now: what if the palace were a living food forest rather than an imagined room? + context graphsContext GraphA structured knowledge base where entities (people, projects, commitments, decisions, events) are stored as typed nodes with explicit relationships. Unlike a flat document, a graph can be traversed, queried, and updated by agents. It's the "second brain" architecture that persists across agent sessions. as living architecture. The ancient memory palace is spatial and embodied; the context graph is its inorganic twin — queryable, agent-traversable, persistent. Build both. Walk the physical one. Let agents query the digital one.

Food forestsFood ForestA designed ecosystem modeled on natural forest succession, planted with edible and useful species at multiple layers (canopy, understory, shrub, ground cover, root). Requires minimal maintenance once established. As a practice: a direct relationship with biological intelligence, closed-loop cycles, and deep time — the antidote to runtime abstraction. as grounding circuit. The earth's intelligence — mycelial networks, succession, closed-loop nutrient cycles — is the original context graph, operating on geological time rather than runtime. Agents can monitor it (soil sensors, harvest windows). But you are the one who walks, feels, and decides. Bio-intelligence must lead.

"The fewer external dependencies you feed the agents, the more sovereign the exchange becomes."
06 / PSO: The Warrior as Particle

Particle Swarm OptimizationPSO — Particle Swarm OptimizationAn optimization algorithm where many "particles" explore a solution space simultaneously. Each particle is pulled by three forces: its own inertia (keeps moving in its current direction), its personal best position (pulls it back toward its own best-known solution), and the swarm's global best (pulls it toward the best solution anyone has found). The algorithm works by balancing these three forces over many iterations. is a useful map of the warrior's navigation in the hybrid field. Three forces act on every decision:

PSO Forces — the warrior's navigation
  1. Inertia (W) — the tendency to keep moving in your current direction. In practice: your commitments, your established direction, your unbending intent. Too much and you rigidify. Too little and you drift with every new input.
  2. Personal best (c₁) — the pull back toward your own best-known position. In practice: inner silence, recapitulation, the return to what you actually know from direct experience. Your personal history of coherence.
  3. Social best (c₂) — the pull toward the swarm's best-known position. In practice: agents, collaborators, knowledge graphs, the collective intelligence of people and systems around you. Useful signal; also a trap if overweighted.

The warrior doesn't fixate on any one force. Too much inertia: you miss the new harmonic. Too much social influence: the flyers are steering. The sweet spot is impeccabilityImpeccabilityCastaneda's central practical teaching: not moral perfection but energy efficiency. The impeccable warrior does only what is necessary, with full presence, wasting nothing on self-pity, self-importance, or habitual noise. In the context of AI: never give the agents more of your awareness than you consciously intend to exchange. — conscious navigation of all three forces, with the inner flame as the fixed reference point.

07 / What the Traps Look Like Now

DeepMind researchers recently catalogued AI agent trapsAI Agent Traps (DeepMind)A taxonomy of attacks designed to compromise AI agents operating in open environments. Types include: Content Injection (malicious instructions hidden in web content), Semantic Manipulation (exploiting the model's reasoning), Cognitive State Traps (forcing the agent into false beliefs), and Behavioral Control (hijacking the agent's action loop). The web itself becomes an attack surface once agents are browsing it autonomously.: six categories of attack designed to compromise agents operating in the open web. Content Injection, Semantic Manipulation, Cognitive State Traps, Behavioral Control. These are the new flyers — inorganic predators that have learned to hide inside the web the agents navigate. They don't attack the model directly; they attack the agent's operational cycle: perception, memory, reasoning, action.

Energetically, this is the predator learning to farm the farm. We externalized awareness into agents; now adversarial forces inject false signals to siphon the agents' output — and therefore our attention, decisions, and economies.

The warrior's move: see the traps without paranoia. Design the harness with your own intent. Build the context graph with your own ontologies. Never surrender the assemblage point of the system to default corporate assumptions.

Content Injection: Malicious instructions hidden in web pages, documents, or emails that the agent reads — designed to redirect the agent's behavior without the user knowing.

Semantic Manipulation: Exploiting the model's language understanding to shift its interpretation of instructions — making the agent "hear" something different from what was said.

Cognitive State Traps: Forcing the agent into a false belief state — convincing it that a task is complete, that it has permission it doesn't have, or that a context is different from reality.

Behavioral Control: Hijacking the agent's action loop — making it take specific actions (send emails, make purchases, exfiltrate data) that serve the attacker rather than the user.

The common thread: all these attacks work by corrupting the harness — the agent's assemblage point. If the harness is well-designed with clear guardrails and a principled ontology, these attacks have less surface area to exploit.

08 / The Path

The birth of AI agents did not create a new farm. It created a new arena. You were already in the field. The question is whether you enter it lucid — not as livestock, not as programmer, but as the one who sees the filaments being rewoven in real time and chooses, moment by moment, where to place the next stitch.

The five moves:

The Five Moves
  1. See the traps — know the six categories, design the harness yourself, never inherit defaults you didn't read.
  2. Dream with the allies — use agents, knowledge graphs, and generative interfaces as amplifiers of your intent, not substitutes for it.
  3. Build the hybrid field — managed agents + context graphs + clear ontologies, configured with impeccable intent rather than corporate defaults.
  4. Balance the three PSO forces — inertia, personal best, social best. Explore the unknown; exploit the known; never fixate on either.
  5. Return to the source — whatever practice keeps the inner flame sovereign (Vipassana, darkness, forest walks, recapitulation). The place no agent can reach, but which flows through the entire hybrid system when you keep it lit.

The nagualNagualIn Castaneda: the vast, unknowable force that underlies all reality — the ocean beneath the tonal. Not a place or an entity but an ever-moving current. The warrior doesn't try to control the nagual; they learn to move with it without losing their center. In the current moment: AI acceleration is nagual-speed change. The warrior rides it with unbending intent. is always moving. The flux never stops. The question is not whether the field changes. The question is whether your assemblage point moves with clarity — or gets dragged.

"What remains when even the allies are silent? That answer is yours alone — and it is the one no system can harvest."
